It is the end of September 2023.
The time is .
You are running.

Music by Stephan Kochen

It is a little late today, come back tomorrow.
The sun rises around 06:40.

You are an early bird, too early! Check back a little later. Around 6:40 the sun rises.

In September 2023, I had the idea to capture a day from this beautiful, long summer before the year succumbs to the Berlin winter. This idea materialized into Capsule Neukölln.

Close About

Me? That's Julius, the guy you see walking around now. I have been living in Berlin for almost 10 years now. I am a photographer, facilitator, learning & experience designer, team coach, maker, writer, friend, partner. It's hard to really find a good term for what I do, it's many things. I love to learn and start over. I do this by doing and involving myself in projects. This is one of them.

It is a video documentation of my jogging route along the Tempelhofer Feld and through the Hasenheide from sunrise to sunset. I captured not only how the light changes throughout the day but also, almost incidentally, the unique atmosphere of my neighborhood.
It is 12 hours and 20 minutes, from 06:40 am until 19:00 pm when the sun finally set behind the hangar of the old Tempelhofer airport. I completed my usual running route 17 times at that point.
12 hours and 20 minutes of mundane runner's reality amidst drug dealers, kites, and dachshunds. Berlin's record-breaking summer, but no reason for joy: cozy warmth, construction sites, vibrant activity between asphalt eldorado, and the secret green diversity of the Hasenheide.
On one side: just a casual glance, but then again, the grand stage for a horde of kindergarten kids rolling down the hill. If you only look long enough and have the right soundtrack, everything turns into a movie. From the foggy early morning hours on the Berlin sea, through yawning and gleaming midday hours, to a lively-blue finale of a day on the picnic blanket grandstand of the Feld.
While traversing the sometimes dreamy, often mundane visual moments, I journey through the different soundscapes of Neukölln's surprisingly green urbanity.
Deafening street noise gives way to snippets of conversations and the wind from Schöneberg on the Tempelhofer Feld, before another wave of asphalt noise on Columbiadamm introduces the intricate calm of the Hasenheide.
In between: everyday conversations in passing, music fragments from Bluetooth speakers, bands in the Hasenheide, street musicians on the field, a singing jogger, the Ringbahn. Beneath it all: the metronome of my footsteps and breath.
Thank you Stephan Kochen for the music on this project, it lets it really shine.
I documented most of the steps that were necessary for taking an idea in sketchbook to the state you are experiencing now. Some steps are better described than others, but it will give you an insight how it came together and may provide support for people who want to do something similar.

Documentation for this project

Along with the documentation in compiled a list of website and resources that enabled me to do this project mostly on my own. From videography tipps and encoding faqs to coding snippets I used you can find everything in this list. I am happy and mesmerized to live in a time where people on the internet share their knowledge to freely with another.
